Volunteers Needed for National Route 66 Museum

As tourists travel Route 66, people from all over the world stop in at Elk City’s National Route 66 Museum Complex. The docents of the museum are volunteers who help out in the old-fashioned drugstore throughout the summer months. Beginning in May during Memorial Day weekend and running through Labor Day, local volunteers greet travelers, talk about the community, the museum, and Route 66.

Now is the time to volunteer for three hour shifts to become a part of this historic museum. Volunteers do not need any experience, but it does require a friendly smile, attitude, and a willingness to help out.

Being a docent is a way to become a part of this historic route that travels from Chicago to California. Each volunteer will represent the Elk City community as they greet people in the drug store and answer questions about Western Oklahoma and Elk City.

It is great for retired individuals who may want to get out of the house, or it could be a way students can learn more about the world as they meet people traveling Route 66. Each day is new and different, so call Carla Garrison for more information or to sign up to become a docent at 580225- 2892.
