Sayre Rattles Cordell

The Sayre Eagle high school football team traveled to Cordell to open the 2025 season where they defeated the Blue Devils by the lopsided score of 62 to 18 last Friday evening. The win made it the seventh year in a row against the struggling Cordell team when the Eagles put up a total of 264 points to 33 in that period of time. After last Friday the Blue Devils will finish the season in an 8-man team schedule.

Sayre put on the scoreboard 42 points in the first half and 20 in the second half where the reserve players took control. Eleven Eagles had the opportunity to carry the ball in the game and four of those players scored at least one touchdown. The game began when Stone Mackey kicked off to Cordell. The kick was received by Braxton Mcguire and returned 19 yards to the Blue Devil 39-yard line. Three plays from there lost 11 yards before Jaxon Davis punted to Sayre.

The punt put Sayre on offense at the Cordell 48-yard line. Camden Plummer got the offense started on a 10-yard run to the Devil 38. From there it took only six more plays to put the first points on the board. Jaden Mosser displayed his speed and maneuver ability by zipping 16 yards for the first Eagle score.

Plummer connected on a pass to Brayden Mosburg for the 2-point conversion to give the early score 8-0 with 6:42 on the clock in the first quarter. Following the ensuing kickoff Cordell could not earn one yard in three plays before Davis punted 43 yards to the Sayre 32. This time the Eagle score came after 5 plays when Mosser ripped off a 14-yard TD run. The PAT (Point After Touchdown) failed to leave the score at 14 to 0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter. Mackey booted the following kickoff to the Cordell 30 where Briggs Reeves made a fair catch. Cordell again failed to gain a first down after three plays lost 5 yards back to the 25-yard line. From there Davis punted 30 yards to the Eagle 45.

Once again Sayre cranked out a TD drive by covering the distance to the Devil goal line in 5 plays with Mackey crashing into the end zone from 3 yards out. Plummer ran for the PAT boosting the score to 22 to 0 with 1:08 left in first quarter. After the ensuing kickoff Cordell took possession at their own 20yard line. The Devils got their only first down in the first half at this point when Reeves squirmed 14 yards to the Devil 34 on the first down of the possession.

But 3 plays later facing a 4th and six situation Cordell punted only 12 yards to the 50-yard line on the first play of the second quarter. Sayre continued their offensive ways by covering the yardage to score again this time in six plays. Coy Capehart carried the ball the final ten yards for the touchdown. A pass for the PAT failed and the score now read 28 to 0 with 8:53 left before halftime. Cordell fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Ryan Beck recovered for Sayre at the Cordell 23. But 3 plays later the Eagles fumbled the ball back to Cordell at the Devil 18. Conner Gregg recovered for Cordell. The Blue Devils got their second first down in the first half on a penalty against Sayre that put the ball at the Cordell 31.

But 2 plays later the Devils fumbled the ball back to Sayre when the ball was jarred loose and fought for 15 yards back to the Cordell 8-yard line where Carter Brewer won the scuffle by scooping the ball from the 8 and running it into the end zone for an 8 yard Eagle TD. A pass for the PAT failed and the score read 34 to 0 with 4:16 left in the first half.

Sayre scored once more in the first half when Capehart intercepted a Blue Devil pass and returned it 33 yards for another TD. Quaid Whitney flipped a pass to D.J. Ricardio for the PAT and the score at the half was 42 to 0.

Capehart returned the second half kickoff 23 yards to the Cordell 45. The Eagles wasted no time in putting up their seventh TD of the evening by driving 45 yards in 8 plays. The TD was earned by Tate Bawden when he caught a pass from Jagger Wootton to score a one-yard TD. The PAT failed and the score was now 50 to 0 with 8:58 left in the third quarter. Cordell got their first of 3 second half touchdowns on the ensuing kickoff when Kach Whiting caught the kick at the Cordell 18 and returned it 82 yards for a dazzling TD run.

The PAT failed leaving the score at 50 to 6 with 8:52 left in the third quarter. Later Sayre scored their next TD by traveling 52 yards in 7 plays. The TD was a one yard off tackle run by Payton Wood. The PAT pass failed to leave the score at 56 to 6 with 1:14 left in the third. After the ensuing kickoff by Mackey the Blue Devils covered 70 yards to score again with 8:37 left in the final quarter. Aided by a 33-yard run by Braxton McGuire and a 15-yard penalty against the Eagles the score came on a one-yard plunge by QB Reeves. The PAT run failed on a tackle made by Mike Provencio leaving the score at 56 to 12 with 8:37 left to play. Sayre scored quickly after the ensuing kickoff.

In four plays they traveled 47 yards in 4 plays with Quaid Whitney gaining the touchdown on a 38-yard run. The PAT failed leaving the score at 62 to 12 with 5:42 left. Cordell finished the scoring off for the night following the ensuing kickoff by going 42 yards in 5 plays with Reeves ending the drive on a 35 yard. The Eagles will travel to Thomas this Friday evening to test the always tough Terriers with a 7 PM game start. Thomas defeated the Eagles last year 20 to 8.

Sayre finished last season with a 5-win 5 loss record and was one game short of advancing to the playoffs. Hopes are high that they will make it this year, but the going will be tough as their district is touted as the toughest in the class.
