Thomas up-ends the Eagles

The Sayre Eagles went on their second away trip in the 2025 football season when they traveled to Thomas and suffered their first loss of the year by a convincing score of 34 to 6 last Friday evening. Rated # 1 in Class A football the Terriers scored 20 points in the first quarter of the game and 14 points in the second quarter to lead the Eagles at the half by the score of 34 to 0.

The Eagles added their only points in the game on a fourth quarter drive of 91 yards in 13 plays to the Thomas end zone. Carter Brewer took care of most of the yards in the drive by rushing 9 times for 63 yards and a 7-yard touchdown. The Eagles held the Terriers to no points in the second half but couldn’t capitalize on offense when they fumbled away 3 of their possessions in the half.

Thomas kicked off to Sayre to begin the game. Sayre gained one first down before having to punt to the Terriers 3 plays later. Thomas began from their own 42yard line and scored their first TD in 4 plays. QB Tye Littlebird carried the ball on 3 of those plays for 57 of the 58 yards and the TD. Brady Miller toed the PAT to put Thomas ahead 7 to 0 with 8:28 left in the first quarter. Following the ensuing kickoff Sayre gained one first down but ran out of downs four plays later. A fourth and one play failed to get the first down and Thomas took over at the Eagle 40-yard line. It took only 4 plays to find the end zone again with Wylie Heinsohn getting the TD on a 2-yard dive. Miller kicked for the PAT and the score now read 14 to 0 with 4:18 left in the first quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff Sayre began at their own 20 and gained one first down before the next 3 plays and a 5-yard penalty caused the Eagles to punt back to Thomas. But the punt was blocked and after the Terriers recovered the ball at the Sayre 25, they scored their third TD of the night in 4 plays with Cash Willis cashing in on a run of 14 yards. The PAT failed and Thomas now led 20 to 0 with 0:42 left in the first quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff Sayre once again was stymied after 3 plays netted a single yard. The fourth down punt was for 20 yards to put Thomas on offense from their own 44-yard line. Again, the Terriers were unstoppable when they marched 56 yards to paydirt in 6 plays. Littlebird punched into the end zone from one yard line. The PAT kick by Miller was true and the score read 26 to 0 with 6:02 left in the first half. Berek Bawden returned the ensuing kickoff 17 yards to the Eagle 25 from the 8-yard line. Once again, a penalty was too much to overcome and after 3 plays came up 3 yards short of a first down Jaden Mosser made a great 48-yard punt to the Terrier 20-yard line. From the 20 Thomas put on an 80-yard devastating march for their fifth TD of the night. The Terriers went to the airways and gained 72 of the 80 yards on 4 of 5 passing. Littlebird tossed a 21-yard TD pass to Tristan Dobbins for the score. The PAT kick was good and the score at the halftime was 34 to 0 The second half began when Sayre kicked an onside kick which was recovered by Carter Brewer to give the Eagles the ball at the Thomas 45. A run of 16 yards by QB Jagger Wootton advanced the ball to the 29. But 3 plays later a fumble occurred, and Thomas recovered at the Terrier 30. The Eagles forced Thomas to punt after 3 plays, and a penalty netted only 6 yards. The punt was 25 yards to the Sayre 39. After one first down was attained, Sayre fumbled again, and Braden Wood recovered for Thomas at the Eagle 49yard line. Sayre led by Zeke Curtis, Stone Mackey and Brock Helton denied the Terriers a first down after 3 plays and on fourth down they got off a 2-yard punt that gave Sayre the ball at the Eagle 41-yard line. But 3 plays lost one yard on the next Eagle possession. Mosser got off a huge 54yard punt that bounced and rolled to the Terrier.6-yard line. Three plays lost two yards back to the 4-yard line forcing a punt by the Terriers. The punt was for 49 yards to the Eagle 47. A penalty against Sayre after a 2-yard return by Mosser set the ball back to the Sayre 40.

After two plays netted 6 yards to the Eagle 46 Sayre fumbled away the ball for the third time and it was recovered by Cash Willis at the Sayre 49. Once again, the Eagle defense shined when they gave up only 8 yards in 3 plays before Thomas was forced to punt 37 yards to the Eagle 9-yard line. The defensive effort on that Terrier possession was turned in by Camden Plummer, Aiden Ball, Brayden Mosburg, Ryan Beck, Curtis and Helton. From the 9-yard line, Sayre put on their best offensive effort of the night when they went on a grinding 91-yard drive in 13 plays to the end zone. Brewer earned the TD on a 7-yard run behind the blocking of Alex Chavez, Mackey, Cason Hagerman, Helton, Curtis, Plummer and Berek Bawden. A run attempt for the PAT failed and Sayre was on the board with 1:04 left in the game after which the game ended. Curtis and Helton both led in tackles with eleven each while Brewer led in rushing with 69 yards on ten carries.

Sayre will entertain Carnegie for homecoming Friday (9-12) at Sayre in a 7 PM start. Sayre defeated the Wildcats last year 44 to 8.
