September is nationally recognized as Healthy Aging Month, a time to focus on the positive aspects of growing older and encourage practices that support health, independence, and dignity. For residents living in long-term care facilities, healthy aging goes beyond physical well-being – it includes emotional, social, and legal rights as well.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Ombudsmen advocate for quality care, ensure resident voices are heard, and work to resolve complaints that affect residents’ health and quality of life.
This September, the Ombudsman Program encourages families, caregivers, and facilities to: Promote resident choice in daily activities, meals, and routines.
Encourage social connections to reduce isolation and improve mental health.
Support preventative health measures, such as regular screenings and vaccinations.
Recognize and protect residents’ rights, ensuring they remain active participants in their own care.
If you would like to volunteer or have any other questions or concerns regarding the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program, please contact 1-800-211-2116 or ombudsman. [email protected].
