There will be a benefit garage sale to help Diamond Hernandez with her medical and traveling expenses as she heads to MD Anderson in Houston to treat her rare type of cancer.
The sale will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3rd and 4th, next to D.J. Rentals, 909 S. Main St. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to Hernandez, as she fights this battle with cancer.
Trish Southard has taken on the efforts to help Diamond and her husband, Anthony, with their expenses through this garage sale. The couple have four children, the youngest being seven years old. Anthony is an employee of D.J. Rentals, and because he has had to be off work to care for Diamond, their financial situation is becoming harder to manage.
Diamond has been accepted as a patient at MD Anderson, therefore, the couple will be traveling between Houston and Elk City. She is a waitress at Fred’s but has been unable to work due to the diagnosis.
“Over a half-dozen families have donated items for the garage sale so far, and we have some really good stuff, lots of name brand clothing and shoes, kitchen stuff, household items, etc. Prices will be very reasonable because we want to sell as much as possible. We are giving 100 percent of the proceeds to Diamond,” Southard said.
In addition, there is a Go-FundMe page (gofundme.com) established for donations, called Shine Bright Like a Diamond. The goal is to raise $12,600, to date they have raised $3,575. Not only is Diamond fighting cancer, but her daughter Jayci was also hospitalized with a diagnosis of transverse myelitis, a condition affecting her spinal cord.
Southard is encouraging the community to stand behind this family with donations for the garage sale, monetary donations, or any way a person could let Hernandez know how much people care for this family.
