Sayre knocks Out Watonga 52 to 0

The Sayre Eagle football team rolled over the Watonga Eagles by the lopsided score of 52 to 0 last Thursday evening on the Sayre home field. The Eagle defense smothered the Watonga offense when they allowed only 2 first downs in the game one by passing and the other by penalty. Watonga was held to a negative 7 yards rushing and only 36 passing on 8 of 35 attempts.

Meanwhile, the offense was unstoppable as Sayre scored in every quarter of the game. Three TDs in each of the second and third quarters with one each in the first and fourth quarters. Eleven Eagle players provided the rushing yards totaling 312 yards on 51 carries.

Sayre received the opening kickoff and right away began the first of 8 scoring possessions Camden Plummer started the Eagle motor by returning the kickoff 35 yards from the Sayre 5-yard line to the Eagle 40. Sayre was penalized 5 yards for an offside violation before the first of 10 successive plays began. Thus, the opening drive began at the Sayre 35 and covered 65 yards to the Watonga end zone. Plummer provided the 6 points on a six-yard run. The PAT run failed and the score remained 6 - 0 with 6:37 left in the first quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff Watonga lost six yards on 3 downs. The big play was a loss of 9 yards on a tackle of the Quarterback by Jaden Mosser. Two plays later Watonga punted 38 yards to the Sayre 21. Sayre failed to keep this possession alive and after moving the ball to the Watonga 46 came up a yard short of a first down at the Watonga 45. Watonga completed a pass for 5 yards but failed to connect on two more passes forcing a punt by Cooper House. The kick was 41 yards to the Sayre 14 where Mosser made a fair catch of the ball.

As the first quarter ended the Eagles faced a punting situation from their own 22 on fourth down. Mosser punted 22 yards to the Sayre 44. Watonga once again was stymied by the solid Sayre defense. Three plays netted 6 yards before Watonga elected to pass on fourth down. The pass was for only 2 of the 4 yards needed. Mosser made the tackle that prevented the first down.

Sayre was assessed an offsides penalty before their first down-play could get underway and their offense unfolded from the Eagle 31. The first play was all Sayre needed when QB Jagger Wootton heaved a deep pass to Brayden Mosburg who made the catch and outran the defense to paydirt. The PAT failed leaving the score at 12 to 0 with 8:43 left before halftime. Watonga got the first of their two first downs of the night in their next possession following the kickoff. After two incomplete passes and a loss of 3 yards House got off a 42-yarder to the Sayre 30. Once again, the Eagles cranked out a TD drive by going 70 yards in 6 plays aided by 43 yards in penalties against Watonga to the end zone. The touchdown was a 4-yard pass from Wootton to Tate Bawden. A run for the PAT again came up short to leave the score 18 to 0 with 5:57 left in the first half. Following the ensuing kickoff, Watonga got their second first down in the game when an eleven-yard pass was completed from QB Boomer Mendenhall to Brayson Gordon. Later with the ball at the Sayre 49yard line Watonga attempted to connect for a first down on a running play that only got one of two yards needed. Aiden Ball and Matthew Wynn made the tackle on the fourth-down play.

From their own 48 Sayre quickly traversed the 52 yards to paydirt in 5 plays. Big plays of the drive were a 17-yard gain by Mosser and a 12-yard gain by Plummer. The TD was a one-yard run by Mosser. Watonga’s next possession began at their own 30 but an intercepted pass by Berek Bawden ended the drive at the Watonga 46. The Eagles ran out the clock from there to end the first half.

Watonga received the third quarter kickoff but were denied a first down after three plays lost 5 yards. From the Watonga 31 House punted only 24 yards to the Sayre 45. Big runs of 13 yards by Wootton, 18 by Plummer and seven by Berek Bawden put the ball at the Watonga 6-yard line where Carter Brewer finished off the drive on a 6-yard run. Quaid Whitney ran for the PAT to put Sayre on top 32 to 0.

After the ensuing kickoff Watonga gave up the ball when three plays netted only 2 yards. House punted 41 yards to the Sayre 25 where Mosser made the catch and roared 49 yards back to the Watonga 26. Passes of 14 yards to T. Bawden and 10 yards to Zeke Curtis put the ball at the 2-yard line where Wootton followed the line blocking into the end zone for the TD. The PAT failed and the score read 38 to 0 with 5:01 left in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff Watonga had the ball at their own 14-yard line. But on the first play a pass was intercepted by Plummer at the 27 and returned 13 yards back to the Watonga 14. Sayre used only one play to up the score again when Wootton flipped a pass to T. Bawden for a 14-yard TD. Curtis ran across the PAT leaving score 46 to 0 with 4:39 left in the third quarter. Aiden Balls kickoff was returned from the 20 to the Watonga 34. After 3 plays lost 4 yards back to the Watonga 30, House once again punted. This was for 28 yards to the Sayre 42. The Eagles mounted their final TD of the night. The first 6 plays were made as the third quarter came to a close. In 3 plays of the fourth quarter the drive ended at the Watonga goal line. The last three plays were running plays by Whitney with 5 yards, B. Bawden with 12 and Jason Kirkland with the final 25 yards. The PAT failed to leave the final score at 52 to 0.

This win put the Eagles in a great position to make the playoffs. Cashion is next on the schedule and Sayre will meet them at the Cashion football field at 7Pm next Friday. Cashion defeated the Eagles last year 35 to 14.
