Sayre Falls to Cashion 31 - 8

The Sayre Eagle football team traveled to Cashion last Friday afternoon to engage the Wildcats in an early 5 PM starting time and were upended by the score of 31 to 8. The early start was due to an expected rainstorm that evening. The Eagles held the Wildcats at bay in the first quarter and the score remained 0 - 0 going into quarter number 2. As the second quarter began Sayre had the ball at their own 26 in a third down and 8 situation. The play was a pass that lost 3 yards back to their own 23. On fourth down the Eagles set up to punt the ball but the attempt was muffed and the ball ended up in a loss of 14 yards back to the 9-yard line. Inspired the Wildcats took only 2 plays to break the tie, and Jayden Bolton crossed the Sayre goal line on a 4 run. Andrew Stockon kicked the PAT and Cashion took the lead 8 - 0 with 10:37 left in the first half.

Sayre received the ensuing kickoff and began their next possession at the Eagle 32 after a 17-yard return of the kick by Camdyn Plummer. The Eagles could not get their offensive rhythm going and after 3 plays netted only 7 yards a fourth down 22-yard punt was made from the Sayre 39 to the Cashion 39. The Wildcats were on top of their game as they marched 61yards for their second TD of the afternoon. The score was a 13-yard run by QB Kallen Smith. The PAT kick was good, and the Wildcats upped the score to 14 to 0 with 6:20 left in the second quarter. The game did not get any better for Sayre when they fumbled the ball on first down at the Eagle 17 after the ensuing kickoff. Tate Bawden and Zeke Curtis were instrumental in preventing the Wildcats to move the ball ahead and on fourth down Cashion set up for a 37-yard field goal attempt. The kick by Stockon was good and the Wildcats had a 17 to 0 lead with 4:49 left in the first half.

Following the Cashion kickoff Plummer got a ten-yard return to the Sayre 25. A 15-yard run by Mosser plus another 15 by penalty on the play put the Eagles at the Wildcat 45 with a first down. After a 2-yard loss back to the 47 a Plummer pass to Mosser was c aught and advanced 22 yards to the Cashion 25. A pair of penalties against Sayre moved the ball back to the Cashion 38. The drive fizzled from there and a subsequent punt of 12 yards by Mosser and a return of 12 yards by the Wildcats put the ball at the Cashion 38. Both teams each had an unsuccessful possession before the first half ended.

Aiden Ball kicked off to start the second half and the Wildcats began their possession at their own 44. Lightning struck from there when Cashion made gains in 3 plays of 26, 9 and 31 yards while overcoming a ten-yard penalty to score their third TD of the afternoon. The TD was on a 31-yard pass from Smith to Ethan Waswo. The PAT kick was good to up their lead to 24 - 0 with 10:23 left in the third quarter. Plummer returned the ensuing kickoff 17 yards out to the Sayre 34. Sayre gained one first down before turning the ball back to Cashion on a 10-yard punt by Mosser at the Sayre 41. In 8 plays the Wildcats continued their offensive surges to the Sayre end zone. The TD was a 9-yard run by QB Smith. Stockon kicked the PAT and Sayre now trailed 31 to 0 with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff was returned 14 yards by Jason Kirkland the Eagles had their best offensive possession of the game when they drove 64 yards for their only TD in the game. The TD was a 20-yard pass by Dustin McSorley to Tate Bawden. Cashion’s lead was cut to 31 to 8 after McSorley ran across the PAT with 7:29 left in the game. Following the ensuing kickoff the Wildcats began at the Cashion 45 and in 5 plays were at the Eagle 4-yard line when the game was called off due to lightning strikes close by at the 3:28 mark.

Both Cashion and Sayre will play Fairview and Hinton to end the regular season. Fairview is rated number one in District1 and Hinton rated number 8. With Sayre having a 3 win 2 loss record in District 1A and Cashion with a 4 win 1 loss Sayre would have to win both of their final games and Cashion loose one of their 2 games to get the Eagles a chance at a third place finish in the district and that would bring the point system into play. If both teams loose one and win one the Eagles would go into the playoff as the fourth-place team in the district. Stranger things have happened in a setup like we have in football but that in my best guess as to the outcome. The Eagles will entertain Fairview on the Eagle field this Friday evening. Fairview defeated Sayre last year 49 to 24. Fairview is leading the district 1A race with a 5-win 0-loss. Overall, they are 7-1. They are ranked second in all of Class AI. Sayre is rated 14th.
