Beckham County Courthouse Dome Restoration Completed

Beckham County Courthouse Dome Restoration Completed

The Beckham County Courthouse has reached a major milestone with the completion of its newly restored Copper dome, returning a defining architectural feature to the historic building.

Completed in 1911, the courthouse was designed by the architectural firm of Layton, Wemyss, Smith, and Hawk and has long served as a centerpiece of civic life in Beckham County. Over time, the original dome deteriorated due to age and weather, prompting the recent restoration project.

The completed work restores the dome’s original appearance while incorporating modern construction techniques to improve safety and durability. County officials said the project was carefully completed to maintain the courthouse’s historic integrity.

The courthouse also holds national significance for its appearance in John Ford’s 1940 film The Grapes of Wrath, based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Its inclusion in the film tied the landmark to a broader chapter of American history during the Great Depression.

Residents and officials have responded positively to the restoration, calling it an important investment in preserving one of the county’s most recognizable landmarks.

The restored dome now stands as a renewed symbol of Beckham County’s history, civic pride, and commitment to preservation.
