The Sayre High School Baseball team launched their first game of the season at home where they were outscored 5 to 2 last Saturday afternoon. The Eagles scored first when in the bottom half of the first inning Cam Plummer led off with a single followed by a walk issued to Berek Bawden that put runners on first and second bases. Tate Bawden then singled to center field to drive in Plummer from second base, but he was thrown out at second base when he tried to stretch his single into a double. B. Bawden advanced to third on the play. Zeke Curtis was hit by the first pitch after he stepped into the batter’s box. But the scoring was over as the next batter popped out to second base before the next batter struck out to end the inning. The Bombers loaded the bases in the top half of the second inning on a single, a walk and an error. But a double play was turned when the next batter bunted a ball back to Zeke Curtis who then through to catcher Jagger Wootton for the force out at home plate before Wootton fired the ball to Brendyn Greer for the second out of the double play. The next batter was hit by a pitch that put him on at first base to load up the bases again. The next batter hit a ground ball to Plummer at the second base position who tossed the ball to B Bawden who then stepped on the second base bag to end the inning. In the bottom half of the second inning Sayre put another run on the scoreboard. Rocky Willis was the first to enter the batter’s box and was given a walk to first base after 4 pitches failed to enter the strike zone. Layton Simpson grounded out to the second baseman as Willis advanced to second base. Willis moved up to third base on a passed ball. Quaid Whitney grounded out to second baseman, but Willis scored on the play. A Popup out to the third baseman ended the inning with the Eagles in from 2 to 0.
No scoring was made in the third inning but in the fourth inning a single and a walk was followed by two Eagle errors that allowed Frederick to score 2 runs giving the Bombers a tie on the board at 2-2. Sayre did not manage to score again in the game, but Frederick added 3 more runs, 2 in the sixth inning and 1 in the seventh to give them the victory at 5 to 2.
Sayre used 3 pitchers in the game. Zeke Curtis started the game and went 3.1 innings giving up 2 hits and two unearned runs. He walked two batters and struck out one. Tate Bawden took the mound and pitched 2 innings giving up 1 hit and 2 runs one earned and one unearned. He walked 3 batters and struck out 4. Rocky Willis finished the game pitching the final 1.2 innings and gave up 1 hit and 1 earned run. He had no walks or strikeouts.
Tate Bawden led the team in the hitting department with 2 hits one walk and one RBI.
Camdyn Plummer went one hit in 3 times at bat while scoring one run. He had one walk. Quaid Whitney had one turn at bat and earned the other RBI for Sayre. Berek Bawden had one of Sayres 6 hits and had one walk. Willis had one hit and one run scored and one walk and a strikeout. Sayres new head coach is Brody Shook who will lead his team to their next game on Monday March 9th at Navajo, followed by a game at Hollis on the 10th and one at Ketchum on the 14th. The Eagles have returned 7 starters from last year’s District championship team and will be looking to go higher this year.
