The local municipal golf course, ran by the Sayre National Golf Board, hosted their last winter scramble of the year last Saturday the 14th with 37 players of all ages participating. As it would be, the oldest and the youngest golfers ended up drawn together: Trell Vernon, 14 was paired with seventy-nine-year-old Geary Don Burrows.
Eight teams made it to the course, and the winners, with a 28 were Drew Spitzer, Kyler Hibler, Landon Sawyer, Brandon Miller and Bill Farmer, only one behind were Stan Perry, Dylan Perry, Travis Vernon and Jonathan James. In their place with a 30 were Baylor Cotts, Barry Christian, Billy Haas, and R. Bagby. Two teams tied at 31: Bryan Mrakham, Scott Martin, Alston Gray, J. Goodman and A. Thurston with Blake Ramirez, Shan Callahan, Zack Potter and Trey Rios.
Participants were invited to a long driving contest that drew about half of the field, and three tees were used for purposes. The winner was Blake Ramirez with a big drive of 301 yards (no forward tees), he was followed by Jonathan James with adjusted 300 yards and Heath Martin with adjusted 284. Oldest man on the field, Geary Don Burrows has an adjusted of 281 yards and young Trell Vernon 278 adjusted.
The popular “Thursday Night Scramble” began last Thursday and will continue every Thursday afternoon until late summer.
The Sayre High School will host their annual tournament on March 30th while the boys will host their invitational on April 8th. The first official, non-high school tournament in the schedule is April 4th with the Sayre Alumni, which starts at 1:00 p.m. and is almost full, so, if you want to be added to the players’ list, call the course at 580-928-9046. The next tournament will be “The Bob”, a two-day event of 4-Man Scramble on May 16-17.
