Makenna Arnold of Sayre and Riley Hartman of Merritt were both selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association Class 2A All-Star Team. This team is composed of the top 10 seniors in class 2A and is voted on by the coaches.

Sayre Eagles Falls to Fairview Yellowjackets Varsity After Seventh Inning Score
Tuesday’s game against Fairview Yellowjackets Varsity was a heartbreaker for Sayre Eagles, as they lost the lead late in a 9-8 defeat. The game was tied at eight with Fairview Yellowjackets Varsity batting in the top of the seventh when Cole Richter drew a walk, scoring one run.

SWOSU Biology Students Win Multiple Awards at Research Conference
Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) is proud to announce that eight students from the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences recently presented their research at the 2023 Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, South Central Regional Convention. The event, which took place from March 31 to April 2 at Mt. Lebanon in Cedar Hills, Texas, drew participants from universities across Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Several SWOSU Biology students received awards, highlighting their outstanding work. Rachel Uhlig of Oklahoma City and Joseph Alcuitas of Enid won the John C. Johnson Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation in their respective categories. Molly Wingard of Pryor won the Frank G. Brooks Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation. Uzziah Urquiza of Guymon earned second place for Outstanding Poster Presentation in his category. As first-place winners, Wingard, Uhlig and Alcuitas will receive financial support to attend the 2024 Beta Beta Beta National Convention in Columbus, Ga. Wingard’s presentation was titled “Seasonal patterns in reproductive output in a self-fertilizing hermaphroditic fish.” Her mentor for this work was Dr. Mark Garcia, Assistant Professor in the SWOSU Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Uhlig and Alcuitas’s presentation, titled “Female amphipods adjust brood sex ratios based on mate choice,” was mentored by Dr. Rickey Cothran, Associate Professor and Chair of the SWOSU Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Urquiza’s presentation was titled “Exploring the metabolic plasticity of pancreatic cancer.” His mentor for this work was Dr. Pragya Sharma, Assistant Professor in the SWOSU Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. In addition, SWOSU Biology students Michael Knabe, Caitlin Wayland, Lindsey Wells and Saraya Hunt presented their research at the conference. The SWOSU team was led by faculty sponsors Dr. Mark Garcia and Dr. Vijay Somalinga, Associate Professor of Biology. SWOSU is proud of these students and faculty mentors for their exceptional contributions to the field of biological sciences. Their success demonstrates their high level of academic excellence and dedication.

New education center planned at OSU’s botanic garden
STILLWATER – Construction will begin soon on the new Horticulture Education Center at The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University. Located near the south entrance of the garden, the facility will be used by students, faculty and the community for both formal and informal learning.

Elk City Motorsports Park Hosts Another Racing Weekend
There will be another round of racing at the Elk City Motorsports Park south of Elk City. The race will feature 750hp ASCS Sooner Region Sprint Cars on Sat., April 22nd. They will be racing for $2000 to win.

Varsity Trojans Clinches Lead in Sixth Inning to Defeat Tigers Varsity
Canute Varsity Trojans stole the lead late and defeated Sterling Tigers Varsity 8-4 on Thursday. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Jake Beutler doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs.

Sayre Varsity Lady Eagles Beats Hslc Sp 23 by Eight Runs
Sayre Varsity Lady Eagles easily dispatched Hslc Sp 23 12-4 on Tuesday Hslc Sp 23 got things moving in the first inning. Sayre Varsity Lady Eagles pulled away for good with four runs in the second inning. In the second Ayva Woods singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, Addi Mariano singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and an error scored one run for Sayre Varsity Lady Eagles.

Pitchers Duel In Low-Scoring Affair, Merritt JH Baseball Falls to Sayre JH
Both teams were strong on the pitcher’s mound on Thursday, but Sayre JH was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Merritt JH Baseball on Thursday. Zachariah Mc-Culley started the game for Merritt JH Baseball and recorded nine outs.

Poole’s Walk-off Picture Perfect Ending In Elk City Varsity Elks’s Victory Over Blanchard
It came down to the wire on Friday, with Elk City Varsity Elks taking victory on a dramatic walk-off home run in the late innings that sealed their victory over Blanchard. The game was tied at 13 with Elk City Varsity Elks batting in the bottom of the eighth when Cale Poole hit a solo homer.
