Garden Tips For August
Vegetables August is a good month to start your fall vegetable garden. Bush beans, cucumbers, and summer squash can be replanted for another crop. Beets, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, and other cool-season crops can also be planted at this time.

County Fair Start Thursday, Sept. 7th.
The Beckham County fair will be begin Thursday, September 7th entering the front building exhibits from 4-7pm. Entries will also be taken on Friday September 8th from 9-11am with judging beginning at 1pm. The exhibit part of the building will be closed during judging and will reopen at 4pm.

Future of Work Summit to explore ever-changing landscape of work
STILLWATER – The inaugural Oklahoma State University Future of Work Summit will be Thursday, Aug. 31 and Friday, Sept. 1 at the Oklahoma City Convention Center. This multi-day summit will examine the rapidly changing facets of work and showcase ways organizations can stay ahead of the curve. Interactive sessions will include topics related to evolving workplace cultures, technology integration, workforce agility and much more.

International Overdose Awareness Day
Drug overdose is one of the world’s worst public health crises. According to the Oklahoma Department of Health, from 2007 to 2016 opioids were the most common drug involved in overdose deaths in Oklahoma. Fentanyl overdose deaths more than doubled from 47 in 2019 to 127 in 2020.

One Hundred Years Ago, August 1923
Heat influenced the month of August. A thermometer in the shade on an Elk City back porch registered 112 degrees; the Main St. brick pavement was so hot, you could smell the car tires melting. The Elk City Natatorium provided swimming for fifteen cents ($2.63 in today’s values).
